The invisible risks of unsuitable footwear

If you work in a hospital or clinic, or spend your day walking corridors from end to end, you know exactly what we're talking about: that moment when you get home and all you want to do is kick off your shoes and never put your feet on the floor again. It's not just tiredness; your feet are crying out for help after a marathon shift on hard floors.

The reality is that healthcare staff are one of the groups most affected by inadequate footwear, as they can walk up to 10 km in a single twelve-hour shift. In fact, according to data from the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA), foot and ankle pain is already the second most common reason for occupational health consultations in hospitals, surpassed only by back problems. This happens because the foot is our base; if the shoe you're wearing doesn't allow it to move naturally, the impact of each step ends up punishing the knees, hips, and lower back.

Many of the problems we see daily, such as the famous plantar fasciitis or annoying bunions, arise from wearing footwear that compresses the toes or doesn't properly support the heel, forcing the foot to make an extra effort not to "lose" the shoe when walking quickly. The concept of respectful or barefoot footwear emerges precisely to stop this, returning to what the foot biologically needs: space for the toes to spread, a flat sole that doesn't alter spinal posture, and flexibility that allows you to feel the ground without suffering the impact of concrete.

At Nibo, we are convinced that your footwear should not be a source of pain, but rather your best protective tool. Switching to a design that respects the anatomy of your foot not only helps you finish your shift with less fatigue but also prevents injuries that could take you away from your calling. Because to take good care of others, you first need to ensure that your own steps are firm and healthy. If your feet are the engine of your work, give them the rest and respect they deserve from the very first step of the day.
