Is a shoe comfortable just because it's soft?
When we think of comfortable footwear, the first image that usually comes to mind is a shoe or clog with a thick, heavily cushioned sole. For years, we've associated comfort with the amount of cushioning, as if the softer the footwear, the greater protection it offered our feet. However, scientific evidence shows that comfort is a much more complex concept.
A scientific review published in Safety and Health at Work concludes that footwear is an effective intervention to improve foot comfort in workers who spend many hours on their feet. The study points out that comfort does not only depend on cushioning but on the balance between different factors such as fit, stability, flexibility, support, and the distribution of plantar pressures. In other words, a very soft shoe or clog is not necessarily the most comfortable or suitable for a long workday.
This conclusion is especially relevant for professionals such as nurses, doctors, healthcare technicians, or pharmacists, who may spend between eight and twelve hours on their feet. In these cases, footwear must not only protect against the risks inherent to the healthcare environment but also promote a stable stride and allow the foot to move as naturally as possible throughout the day.
The research also reminds us that comfort is a subjective perception. The shape of the foot, the way of walking, the type of surface one works on, or the time spent standing mean that the same person can experience very different sensations with the same model of shoe or clog. Therefore, choosing professional footwear should not be based solely on the first impression when trying it on, but on how the body responds after several hours of use.
Many people consider it normal to finish their shift with tired feet, arch pain, a feeling of heavy legs, or the need to take off their footwear as soon as they get home. However, these signs may indicate that the body is compensating for footwear that does not adapt correctly to its biomechanics. Over time, these compensations can transfer to ankles, knees, hips, or the back, affecting overall well-being throughout the day.
In the healthcare sector, where footwear must meet hygiene, safety, and resistance requirements, the challenge is to find the balance between protection and freedom of movement. There is increasing consensus that comfort does not depend on adding more material under the foot, but on designing a shoe or clog that allows the foot to work in the way it is prepared for, without sacrificing the stability and safety required by the professional environment.
Perhaps the best way to know if footwear is truly comfortable is not to ask how it feels when you put it on, but how your body feels at the end of the day. Because true comfort should not be measured by the amount of padding, but by the footwear's ability to accompany the natural movement of the foot throughout the day.
